Have you ever gone to some random event where you wondered if you were supposed to be there? Last night Kristy and I went to hear Senator Dr. Wilbert Keon speak in Renfrew. His talk was advertised as being about "Health, Well-Being, and Productivity." Pretty broad description. I thought it would be worthwhile to hear him talk regardless.
As we parked our car and headed into the building, we found ourselves among mostly senior citizens. This made me (1) wonder if I had misunderstood the ad or not heard some key words like "Health, Well-Being, and Productivity for Seniors" and (2) a little embarrassed as Kristy gave me the look, "what are you dragging me into?"
It turned out that the substance of his talk actually probably needed to be heard by people our (Kristy & me) age than by the age-group that was predominantly in attendance. (Kristy and I were the youngest people present.) I won't really go into it, but his talk was about making legislation and policies that would put all people on a more level playing field regarding overall health. (How's that fer a generalization?)
Not really earth shattering stuff - - definitely important and worthwhile though. Dr. Keon is 74 (as he talked I marvelled at how young he seemed - his mind as sharp as ever, not to mention a full head of thick blond (??) hair). He's still making big contributions to society. Inspiring.
Next time I show up somewhere I don't seem to fit in, I think I'll go ahead and hang around.
